Street Fighter 3: Third Strike is one of the most famous fighting games of all time among players, and though she's most commonly seen being perfectly countered by BST|Daigo in the iconic Evo Moment 37, Chun-Li well-known is one of the game's most powerful characters.
Why does Chun have such an advantage over most of the rest of the cast? She obviously boasts powerful tools in neutral and great damage output, but in his latest video JM Crofts takes a closer look at the situation to highlight some truths and techniques that help give The Strongest Woman in the World a lightning leg up.
We don't see score displays as often now that fighting games aren't made primarily to be played in arcades, but Third Strike is a good two decades old now and thus has a score counter above both players' health bars.
Just as one can watch stun bars for slightly early indications while they're trying to pull off all-important hit confirms, you can actually also pay attention to your score. Land an actual hit and you'll get a few hundred points, but if the opponent blocks or parries your score won't change at all.
The score and stun bar update a full frame before character animations do in 3S, so you actually get a very slight advantage by watching these parts of the user interface. That said, everyone in the game can do this, so why would we bring it up in the context of Chun?
A huge part of Chun's game in 3S is confirming low forward into her Super Art, and she actually has an 18-frame window in which to do this. Unlike most other characters, however, Chun has some wonky cancel properties. She has more time than any other character to react here as her window is 18-frames long, and using the additional help of the UI elements makes it all the easier.
JM Crofts explores this in more detail and with visual help in the full video below, and he then takes on a few hit-confirm challenges to see just how effective he can be with Chun's powerful confirms.
