PlayStation Fans Should Keep an Eye on February 1!

ree

As always, the new year has kicked off with a ton of rumors. Many believe a Nintendo Direct is forthcoming, while others have been eyeing Sony's PlayStation space. Of course, nothing that comes soon is likely to be as massive as Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but many are still looking forward to new games and release dates for this year, not next.

And, as always, the rumors centered around these events should be taken with a grain of salt. All good rumors live and die by their source, and while some believable sources have indicated Sony will host a State of Play event focused on Horizon Forbidden West on February 3, it's still best to keep expectations in check. However, for anyone who has been keeping up with State of Plays, there’s another major component of this rumor: timing.

The February 2022 PlayStation State of Play Rumors Add Up

Last year, every State of Play event took place on a Thursday except one. This means that anyone who is creating fake leaks for State of Plays knows to use a Thursday, but it does go a little further than that. When considering if this is a pattern or not, the only State of Play to not take place on Thursday—the October 2021 State of Play—can be removed from the pool. This State of Play caused some online debate about the branding of State of Plays, as it largely focused on smaller indie games. Indie lovers, of course, cherished it, but many were expecting bigger games.

That’s not the real catcher though: counting the mainline State of Play events (February, April, May, July 2021), every single one of them was revealed on the Tuesday beforehand, except one. For some reason or another, the April State of Play was announced on that Monday. This creates a reasonable pattern: if there is a State of Play happening on any given week, it’s most likely to be announced on that Tuesday. This makes sense, but it also means fans know why Sony hasn’t confirmed the rumor yet.

Factoring in the April State of Play means a Monday announcement isn’t unreasonable, but by and large, if a State of Play is taking place on February 3, fans can expect to know on February 1.

State of Play February 2022: Rumors, Expectations, Reveals, and Date

Now, Sony could change strategy at any time and the new year would be a sensible time for that, but at the same time, it gives the perfect amount of time ahead of a presentation for fans to prepare for it. Thus, while the State of Play rumors gives the date it’s happening, fans don’t have to worry about some surprise on February 2 or February 3. It may only cut off two days of rumor mongering and speculation, but it does help manage expectations enough to not hype up something without knowing when it could be announced.

In all likelihood, Sony will also outline what to expect from this State of Play. The rumors logically state that Horizon Forbidden West will be the main focus, and since it is one of the biggest video games releasing in February, it makes sense. Nonetheless, fans will just have to wait and see if Sony announces the State of Play on February 1, fitting the pattern it maintained throughout 2021.

A State of Play event is rumored for February 3.
