With Luke now released as Street Fighter 5's final character, we'll likely soon be learning more about Capcom's next Street Fighter project. Capcom has made it clear that Luke will fulfill some prominent role in what is likely Street Fighter 6.
Of course, Luke probably won't be the only newcomer that will be featured in the next Street Fighter. This next game could see the debut of a character that saw a at least a couple of redesigns in the drawing board for Street Fighter 5 before ultimately getting scrapped.
During the single player mode of the first Street Fighter game, there was a fight against an assassin known as Gen. In every sense, this makes Gen one of the oldest characters of the Street Fighter series.
When Gen returned during the Alpha series, it was revealed that Gen was diagnosed with leukemia. Upon seeking out Akuma, the two would engage in a fierce battle.
Initially, Akuma wondered if Gen was worthy of a fight to the death as Akuma would only kill those he perceived as strong. However, the battle was eventually cut short by Akuma with the realization that Gen was terminally ill.
Needless to say, Gen has been a somewhat important character throughout the Street Fighter series. It's no wonder that Capcom sought to develop a disciple to Gen for Street Fighter 5.
In the first attempt to create Gen's disciple as a character for Street Fighter, it was planned to have this disciple attack and kill Gen.
"A character that was supposed to be a "dark hero" archetype that fought Necalli," outlined Takayuki Nakayama in a Street Fighter 5 blog. "He's an ambitious young fighter and the successor to Gen's 'Ansatsuken' style of martial arts."
"So ambitious was he that one day, while Gen had fallen ill, he attacked his master and delivered the finishing blow," continued Nakayama. "He seeks to one day defeat Akuma. As this character was ultimately cut, I'm pleased to report that Gen is well."
However, it's hard to say if Gen is still "well" at this point considering a certain event that happened in Akuma's Street Fighter 5 prologue.
Things are left pretty ambiguous, but it's heavily implied that Akuma may have dealt a deadly blow to Gen despite his previous apprehension about killing someone who was terminally ill.
Much later, it was revealed that Capcom attempted a different direction for Gen's disciple. Instead of a "dark hero" male, they instead designed a tall, muscular female as Gen's apprentice.
It seems that Capcom may have intended for Gen and this female apprentice to be more closer compared to the other design. Plans ended up changing and much of this character's elements were used to create Seth in Street Fighter 5 instead.
"A lost character we had, Gen's disciple, who ended up having a lot of her design elements shifted to Seth (well, this is one of her designs anyway)," said Nakayama. "She still has no name. She was meant to be like a grandchild to him."
Notably, Seth was the last character released in Street Fighter 5 before Capcom decided to do Season 5 for DLC. This means that Seth was slated to be the last character for Street Fighter 5. It almost sounds like this could've been Gen's female apprentice instead.
Perhaps Capcom will decide to revisit the idea of a disciple for Gen in Street Fighter 6. As of right now, Gen's fate is suspended in perpetual ambiguousness as the last time we saw Gen was in Akuma's prologue story.
