Blazing Strike at one point looked like a title that would go down into the "what if" category for unreleased fighting game projects after failing to reach its initial Kickstarter goal, but it's reemerged looking better than ever.
Publisher Aksys Games and developer RareBreed recently released their first look trailer for Blazing Strike to showcase their stylish roster of playable characters, who are definitely pulling inspiration from some of the best Capcom and SNK fighting games from the late '90s.
As things stand now, the game appears to have 14 fighters available to pick from including the techno Shaolin monk Lei Long, the giant wrestler with the tiger pelt Alexander, the swordsman assassin Ryohei, the ghost ninja Mochizuki, the femme fatale Hana, and the man with the glowing arm Jake among others.
While the pixel art and animations harken back to the days of Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and The King of Fighters '98, Blazing Strike's overall aesthetic is much more futuristic cyberpunk in both its world and user interface seen throughout the trailer.
RareBreed seems to be ditching the standard EX gauge in favor of their own Rush Meter, which allows players to activate Rush Trigger that enables more flashy combos and movement options.
If a player overextends using their Rush Trigger, however, they'll be left in a groggy state afterwards, so meter management will be an important aspect to keep track of during matches.
The developers have also confirmed their game will include parries as well as use GGPO rollback netcode when it releases.
Speaking of that, Blazing Strike still has a general 2022 release window where it'll hit the digital storefronts of PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC next year.
